Frequently asked questions

Since 1968, Escort School of Motoring has been dedicated to improving the driving skills of our students and promoting safe driving by all road users. The hints and tips below are taken from our Personal Progress Booklet provided to our students to ensure they have the guidance and help they need to make them safer drivers

Rear fog lamps should only be used when visibility is less than 100 metres.

It is illegal to sound your horn in a built-up area between 11:30pm and 7:00am.

Wearing seat belts reduces the risk of serious injury or death by at least 50%.

Traffic Signals

In most cases, in addition to the primary signals at the stop line, there are duplicate signals, known as secondary signals, located on the opposite side of the junction. If the primary signal is not working, you must obey the secondary signal as if it were the primary signal.

RED means STOP. Wait behind the stop line on the carriageway until GREEN shows.

RED and AMBER also means STOP. Do not pass the stop line until GREEN shows.

GREEN means go IF THE WAY IS CLEAR. Take extra care if you intend to turn left or right, and give way to pedestrians who are crossing.

AMBER means STOP. You may go on only if the amber appears after you have crossed the stop line or are so close to it that to pull up might cause an accident

Traffic signals

You have to choose a date at least 10 working days away if you fail your driving test.

A driver asked to produce documents for inspection by the police has 7 days in which to do so, unless a third party is injured, in which case the maximum time is 24 hours.

Newly qualified drivers amassing six penalty points within two years will revert to learner status. The penalty for using a phone (unless handsfree) is 6 points and £200.

The legal limits for alcohol are as follows:

Breath = 35 micrograms per 100ml
Blood = 80 milligrams per 100ml
Urine = 107 milligrams per 100ml

Countdown markers on motorways are blue and 100 yards apart. When leaving signal between 300 and 200 markers.

Marker posts, located at the back of the hard shoulder at 100 metre intervals, show the direction to the nearest emergency telephone (housed in an orange box).

You can use the telephone to contact the control centre in case of an emergency or breakdown Emergency telephones on motorways are 1 mile apart.

A motor car requires an MOT Certificate every year once it has reached 3 years of age.

Carry out daily checks on tyres for obvious faults.

The minimum allowed tread depth on tyres is 1.6mm across 3/4 and full circumference of the tyre.

Circular road signs give orders, triangular signs are mostly warnings and rectangular signs give information.

Do not park within 10 metres of a junction.

Parking your vehicle

A double yellow line means no waiting at any time. The accompanying yellow plate, “no waiting at any time”, is gradually being phased out. Where the “at any time” restriction applies for only part of the year (e.g. during the summer months at a holiday resort) and is for at least four consecutive months, double yellow lines are used with plates giving the dates that the restrictions apply.
